The Protein Brewery builds large-scale demonstration plant
Commercial production of Fermotein® expected to start in late 2022

Breda (the Netherlands), 20 October 2021 – The Protein Brewery, an innovative developer of protein-rich food ingredients, today announces that it will move into its new headquarters in the building at Mijkenbroek 3 in Breda, early 2022. At the same time, construction of the  demo plant will start, an innovative facility of 1,500 m2 with a production capacity of thousands of tons per year.

The plant will be designed to scale up the Fermotein® brewing process. The first commercial-scale plant-based proteins are expected to roll off the production line late 2022.

Wim de Laat, founder of The Protein Brewery:
"This is an important milestone in the development of our company, commercializing our first product, Fermotein®. We use innovative fermentation technologies to produce food proteins that can replace animals in the food chain. The amount of Fermotein®, a plant-based ingredient with an excellent nutritional value and a very sustainable profile, we can produce in an hour corresponds with the meat of 10 cows. On an annual basis, you're talking about approximately 80,000 cows that don’t need to be part of the food chain.

Our brewing process allows us to produce Fermotein® from a variety of crops, from potatoes, sugar beet and corn to sugar cane and cassava, it's a recipe for local, scalable, and efficient processes worldwide. Our expectation is that from 2023 onwards we can start building full scale plants, not only in Europe, but also in the US and Asia. If these are producing at full capacity, then in terms of protein yield you are quickly talking about millions of cows a year that you can save. After all, there are sugar crops in abundance."

Chris Bastiaansen, Entrepeneur and owner of the building:
"After visiting the R&D environment of The Protein Brewery I was immediately convinced, this is a future-proof product. It was therefore not a difficult decision to enter a long-term lease and rental partnership with The Protein Brewery. The company, the enthusiastic team and the motivation shown by the organization, confirms our decision to select The Protein Brewery."

In addition to an expanded version of the Food Experience Center, the new location will also house R&D and engineering functions to increase innovation capacity. TPB is expected to grow from 25 employees to a total company size of about 100 people over the next three years.

Currently, TPB's activities are housed in several buildings on the Goesseelstraat in Breda. The pilot plant, laboratories and Food Experience Center will remain here for the time being. The lease has been concluded for a period of 10 years.
