The Protein Brewery (NL) secures a positive EFSA scientific opinion
for its fermented fungal biomass novel food ingredient

Breda (the Netherlands), December 1st, 2025 – The Protein Brewery, a leader in fungi-based food ingredients, today received a positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) stating that the novel food is safe under the proposed conditions of use.

Dedicated to promoting healthy and safe diets worldwide, The Protein Brewery champions the transition to alternative food sources across the globe. The company’s hero product is Fermotein®, a fermented fungal biomass powder (also known as mycoprotein) with a highly nutritious, healthy, and sustainable profile. This novel food ingredient is rich in protein and fibre, vitamins and minerals, making it a natural wholefood solution suitable for many food and beverage applications.

Today EFSA published their scientific opinion, in which the authority concluded that the information
provided on the production process, composition, stability and specifications was sufficient and raised no safety concerns. Furthermore, there were no concerns on genotoxicity and the likelihood of the novel food triggering allergic reactions is low. The novel food is intended for use as an ingredient in various food products, supplements and meal replacers.

The Protein Brewery did already secure self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status in the USA in 2021 and received regulatory approval in Singapore in 2024 for Fermotein®. The positive EFSA opinion is an important step to commercialize Fermotein® with our new customers and partners in Europe and reaffirms the potential and safety of Fermotein®.

We are very pleased with this incredible milestone for The Protein Brewery and the EU food industry as a whole, for the first-ever fungal biomass to go through the novel food system” says Dr. Yvonne Dommels, Director of Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs at The Protein Brewery. As we were pioneers, the process took maybe a bit longer than expected, but it paid off and we would like to thank EFSA for the collaboration throughout our novel food dossier process. The next step is for the European Commission and the member states to authorize Fermotein® and integrate it into the Union list of novel foods.

Aligned with the company’s mission, CEO Thijs Bosch leads the charge in accelerating the global protein transition bringing safe, nutritious, and planet-friendly solutions to active nutrition and beyond. Securing a positive EFSA scientific opinion marks another significant milestone towards achieving this vision, just after closing Series B funding. “The Protein Brewery sees tremendous potential to enhance the nutritional landscape of everyday food and drink choices for the busy and aging European population. We recognize the trend towards convenience-driven food choices and a stronger reliance on healthy and sustainable nutrition which are high in protein and fibre. By incorporating Fermotein® into these and more traditional dishes, we will increase their nutritional value, enriching them with protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals without compromising on taste and texture. Moreover, Fermotein® has a very low environmental footprint," emphasizes Bosch. In essence Fermotein® sets itself apart by eliminating organoleptic drawbacks and providing a wholefood solution and a complete amino acid profile. This is one of the main reasons that The Protein Brewery is already generating significant sales of Fermotein® in the USA, while our
first customers in Singapore will launch in Q1 2026.

The Protein Brewery is also awaiting novel food authorization in other key markets such as the UK and expects to receive a no-further-question letter from the FDA by Q1/Q2 2026.
