Who are we?

The Protein Brewery (TPB) is a young, highly innovative company focused on creative technologies to develop and produce sustainable food ingredients using classical brewing and precision fermentation technology. We are addressing the eminent global shift from animal-based food ingredients towards a sustainable, plant-based food chain. Our team in Breda, The Netherlands currently consists of 35 people and is growing fast. What does your profile look like?

We are a good match if you have...

  • relevant academic degree(s), at least a Master’s degree in the field of Human Nutrition, Biology, and/or Dietetics

    • Knowledge of plant-based, optimally the alternative protein space including meat or diary alternatives

    • Knowledge of Food Law

  • In depth knowledge of regulatory processes for claims, structure function claims, and health claims across geographies.

  • the ability to interpret scientific and clinical data, written summaries of data reports, presentations, or publications.

  • knowledge of EFSA, FDA, and FSA, is t a big plus if you have experience with the Health Canada, SFA Singapore, National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) China and the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) Japan.

  • understanding and prior experience with EU regulatory processes that concern food, ingredients, foods for particular nutritional uses and dietary supplements.

  • Successfully developed EFSA applications for the pre-marketing approval of health claims (including "new function" health claims under Article 13 .5 and "disease risk reduction" claims under Article 14 of the ‘EC Regulation on Nutrition and Health Claims’).

  • a track record in supervising and designing clinical trials with endpoints which are acceptable by the EFSA for the justification of Article 13.5 and 14 health claims.

  • knowledge of the EU Novel Food Regulation and which foods; ingredients and manufacturing processes fall inside or outside of its scope. This includes experience in preparing a successful novel food submission and understanding how to optimize the likelihood of a positive outcome.

  • familiarity with US regulatory requirements and with the GRAS process and drafting GRAS applications as well as New Dietary Ingredient (NDA) applications.

  • are fluent (written and spoken) in English. Knowledge of Dutch and other languages is a plus.

  • An expert and good communicator with internal and external stakeholders with a creative thinking out-of-the box, solution-oriented mindset in the regulatory environment. Somebody that can hold a position, is decisive, confident and able to take a leadership position on recommending the organization.

Who are we looking for?
The Protein Brewery is developing completely new, highly nutritious food ingredients based on fermentation. We’re looking for a new colleague who will use his/hers scientific, technical and  regulatory knowledge to identify new opportunities to gain competitive advantage through the nutritional attributes of our products. Combining both the nutritional and functional attributes to maximize the positioning of our products and ensure they can enter new markets timely and in accordance with all quality requirements. Internally you will work closely with our Regulatory Affairs & Food Safety officer, Food Technologists and the commercial team (specifically our Marketing Lead). Externally with a range of various external advisors and regulatory authorities (FDA, EFSA etc.). Your main goal is to bring extensive knowledge of regulatory frameworks in our markets around the world to bring our regulatory submissions to a successful outcome. Understanding how to identify the product characteristics  that are most appealing to customers and consumers and then validating this is therefore an important part of this job.

What are your responsibilities and scope in this role?

  • Define how to gain a competitive advantage through nutrition, structure function and health claims across geographies

  • Develop a scientific plan and identify partnering strategies for bringing each new product effectively to the market with the corresponding claims

  • Evaluate and substantiate the safety of ingredients and products through sound scientific studies

  • Review clinical study protocols or reports  and ensure internal follow-up

  • Write reports about the products’ state of the art, consensus, and research gaps

  • Meet with regulatory authorities (FDA, EFSA etc…) in the context of scientific advice reports.

  • Prepare regulatory claims documentation and submit the applications

  • Ensure ingredient and nutrition labelling compliance

  • Work together with our commercial team and advise on how to communicate to our customers and external stakeholders

  • Requirement to attend external events where relevant
